During the recent Devcon, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin showcased Kohaku, a new suite of privacy tools designed to enhance both security and confidentiality across the Ethereum network. Developed collaboratively by the Ethereum Foundation and leading developers, Kohaku represents a critical milestone in Ethereum’s journey toward privacy-centric applications.
Buterin described the current state of Ethereum’s privacy as being in the “final mile,” emphasizing the need for concentrated effort to strengthen user protection and secure transactions.

Kohaku offers a modular framework enabling developers to build privacy-focused wallets without relying on centralized services. Key features include:
Privacy Pools employ a linked-list approach to prevent misuse by malicious actors, ensuring that private transactions remain compliant with Ethereum’s standards.
On November 16, a Kohaku wallet demo showed real-world applications:
Buterin emphasized: “Privacy is freedom. It allows us to act according to our needs without being monitored or influenced by centralized or decentralized forces.”
Ethereum’s commitment to privacy extends beyond Kohaku. The Foundation recently launched the Privacy Cluster, a team of 47 researchers, engineers, and cryptographers dedicated to embedding privacy as a first-class Ethereum feature.
Additionally, the former Privacy & Scaling Explorations group has been renamed Privacy Stewards of Ethereum, reflecting a shift from theoretical research to practical applications such as:
Kohaku marks a significant leap in Ethereum’s privacy and security evolution. By combining open-source modular tools with on-chain verifiability, users can conduct transactions in a more secure and autonomous manner.
With continued progress from Kohaku and the Foundation’s privacy initiatives, Ethereum is moving toward a future where privacy is an inherent right, giving users control, security, and true decentralization in every operation.
