Musk’s Starlink Brings Direct Satellite Connection to Ukraine After Successful Tests
Elon Musk and his satellite network Starlink have made a significant move to support Ukraine’s connectivity. Following a successful field trial, Ukraine will become the first European market to launch the revolutionary Direct-to-Cell (DTC) service, which allows a regular mobile phone to connect directly to a satellite—without the need for special equipment. 📍 The first test took place in the Zhytomyr region, attended by Kyivstar CEO Oleksandr Komarov and Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov. Using the system, they exchanged messages via standard smartphones connected directly to the Starlink satellite network.
Communication Even During Network Outages For a country whose mobile and internet infrastructure is often disrupted by Russian attacks, this is a major breakthrough. The DTC technology turns Starlink satellites into “mobile towers in orbit”—equipped with advanced modems capable of sending a signal directly to mobile phones.
This means functional voice calls, text messages, and, in the future, high-speed mobile internet without relying on ground-based towers. “Our goal is to ensure stable connectivity when terrestrial networks fail,” Kyivstar said in its statement.
Commercial Launch Coming This Year Starlink has already signed agreements with operators in ten countries, and DTC technology is also aimed at remote or hard-to-reach regions where building conventional infrastructure is costly. According to plans by Kyivstar and Starlink, commercial operations will begin in Q4 2025, starting with messaging services. Mobile broadband data is expected to roll out in early 2026. Kyivstar’s parent company, VEON, is also in talks with other satellite providers, including Amazon’s Project Kuiper, to expand mobile satellite services beyond Ukraine.
