Brazil plans to request consultations with the World Trade Organization regarding the U.S. tariffs.
On August 5, Jin10 Data reported that Brazilian Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry and Trade Alckmin said on the 4th that the Brazilian Foreign Trade Association agrees to consult with the United States under the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute resolution mechanism regarding the U.S. imposition of tariffs. According to WTO rules, consultations are the first step in the WTO dispute resolution mechanism. If the two parties cannot reach an agreement through consultations, Brazil may request the WTO dispute resolution body to establish an arbitration panel. Alckmin stated that the specific time and manner of requesting consultations with the WTO are subject to approval by Brazilian President Lula. This request for consultations is a response to the U.S. government's announcement of a maximum 50% tariff on Brazilian products. Currently, products such as meat, coffee, and fruits imported from Brazil by the U.S. have been included in the taxable range.
