Trump announced that a "very close" agreement between China and the U.S. is being reached, and the leaders of both countries will have a call to finalize TikTok's fate.
On Thursday local time (September 18), Bloomberg reported that U.S. President Trump indicated that, in addition to facilitating the sale of TikTok's U.S. operations, he may further extend the trade truce between the two sides during a call with Chinese leaders on Friday. According to U.S. officials, this highly anticipated call is scheduled for 9 a.m. Washington time on Friday and will be the first direct contact between the leaders of the world's two largest economies since June.
( Trump sends positive signals: US-China agreement is "very close"
Trump stated at a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer: "We are very close to reaching an agreement, and we may reach an agreement with China to extend the tariff suspension period, which would be an extension under the same terms as currently, and those terms are actually quite good."
This call took place against the backdrop of easing US-China relations, following mutual tariff increases that triggered market turbulence and heightened concerns about a global economic slowdown. The current 90-day tariff truce is expected to last until early November, and this call may determine whether to extend this period.
) TikTok Trading Details Surface
Regarding the highly anticipated TikTok issue, Trump revealed that the agreement concerning TikTok will be "jointly completed with China," and the U.S. government will receive "an 'additional fee'" for facilitating this deal.
Trump stated that the new version of TikTok will be held by "a completely American investor" and "companies that love America," but he did not directly answer the question regarding whether the app needs to enable a new algorithm.
Earlier this week, negotiators from China and the United States reached a framework agreement to keep the application operational in the U.S. under a national security law. Trump stated in an interview with Fox News after the Summit with Stammer that he is "very close" to reaching a deal on trade and this social video application.
"A few days ago, we had a very good meeting, and it sounds like they have already approved the TikTok deal," Trump said.
Transaction Details and Future Outlook
According to sources, under the agreement, TikTok's U.S. operations will be acquired by a consortium consisting of Oracle Corp., Andreessen Horowitz, and Silver Lake Management LLC. However, the full scope of this plan remains unclear, and officials have revealed that Trump will finalize the agreement during a call with Chinese leaders.
Trump previously stated that TikTok's U.S. assets could be worth tens of billions of dollars. Before departing for the UK on Tuesday in Washington, he said: "I don't want to see that kind of value just thrown out the window."
A national security law signed by former US President Biden requires the Chinese company ByteDance to divest its TikTok US operations, or the video app will be forcibly shut down in the United States. Trump has signed multiple executive orders to extend the deadline set by this law.
It is worth noting that Trump was once skeptical of TikTok, but he has now gradually embraced the app and believes it will help him expand his influence among young voters in the 2024 election.
Bloomberg pointed out that this call is a key turning point for both sides, and the outside world is closely watching whether the two agree to hold their first face-to-face meeting since Trump's re-election.
