The Bitcoin community is debating the removal of the OP_RETURN limit.
The removal of the OP_RETURN data limit in Bitcoin Core version 30 has sparked controversy within the Bitcoin community. Developer Jimmy Song criticized the Core team, calling their approach "fiat thinking" for disregarding users' concerns about non-monetary data on the blockchain.
Previously, OP_RETURN was limited to 80 bytes to protect the monetary focus of Bitcoin. However, claiming that non-monetary uses are "spam" is an ambiguous attempt to avoid substantive debate. The unilateral decision of Core has caused many nodes to switch to Bitcoin Knots, an alternative version developed by Luke Dashjr, which still maintains strict data limits.
In nine months, the usage of Bitcoin Knots increased from 1% to 20% of the network, reflecting the community's dissatisfaction. Debate continues between data flexibility and protecting the currency nature of Bitcoin.
