The U.S. government shutdown is entering a countdown, and the release of key economic data will be hindered.
On September 30, less than 48 hours before the October 1 deadline for a U.S. government shutdown, Trump held talks with leaders of both houses of Congress, but no progress was made on issues such as the Democrats' demand to extend healthcare subsidies and repeal cuts to the Medicaid program in the tax legislation Trump signed earlier this year. Vice President Vance stated that the U.S. government "is heading towards a shutdown," and if an agreement cannot be reached, hundreds of thousands of federal employees will face furlough, and the release of key economic data will also be hindered. Vance attempted to blame the Democrats: "I believe we are heading towards a shutdown because the Democrats are unwilling to do the right thing, and I hope they change their minds; we shall see." Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer stated after the meeting: "If the president could accept some of the requests we've made, he could avoid a shutdown, but there are still significant differences between us. We believe these issues concerning healthcare and the repeal of funding align with the will of the American people." Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune claimed that the Democrats' refusal to approve a short-term spending bill to keep the government running until November 21 is equivalent to "taking hostages," but he also stated that he would continue to negotiate with the Democrats after addressing the current funding deadline. A U.S. government shutdown will delay the release of key economic indicators (including the non-farm payroll report scheduled for release on Friday) and will at least temporarily furlough hundreds of thousands of federal employees, while other government employees will have to continue providing essential services without pay. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced on Monday that it will not release economic data during a potential shutdown. Trump threatened that if the government shuts down, there will be large-scale permanent layoffs of federal employees. If the shutdown occurs, it will be the first U.S. government shutdown since 2018-2019, when funding ran out for five weeks during Trump's first term, including during the New Year period.
