U.S. media broke the news: Trump's team considers the "three big" options for a potential solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict
Two sources familiar with the matter told CNN that in recent days, President Trump's national security advisor pick, Mike Waltz, has been weighing several proposals to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While the specifics of the strategy are still being worked out, Trump officials may push for an early ceasefire to temporarily freeze the conflict during negotiations between the two sides. The first is a proposal by Kurt Volker, the U.S. special envoy for Ukraine, which involves continuing to provide military assistance to Ukraine on the condition that Kyiv engages in peace talks with Moscow and presents a "U.S. policy of seeking a ceasefire and resolving the conflict through negotiations." Meanwhile, Ukraine's desire to join NATO will be "put on hold" for a considerable time to encourage Russian engagement in talks. The second proposal is supported by former U.S. Ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell. Grenell has previously expressed support for establishing "autonomous regions" within Ukraine, although he did not elaborate on what this would entail. Another idea is to allow Russia to retain the areas it currently controls in exchange for Ukraine joining NATO, though few in Trump's circle seem willing to invite Ukraine to join NATO in the near term.
